Where are you based? I live in Co. Galway in the west of Ireland, and am originally from Monaghan.
What do you love about The Thrive Programme? I love how straightforward and predictable it is. If you put in the right effort, you will see results. It’s also really empowering, placing the emphasis back on what you can do now rather than on spending lots of time analysing the past or delving into complex psychological theories.
It gives you the tools to build your own great mental health, and I loved the positive feeling I had after each coaching session as a client.
What did you do before you became a Coach? I’ve always been passionate about the environment and completed a PhD in environmental law and governance. I have worked as a civil servant on environmental policy and for an environmental and community NGO. I've also been involved in different community groups as well.
What do you do when you're not working? I love getting out for walks and hikes and that is definitely my favourite way to spend my spare time. I am working my way through hiking the highest point in each Irish county and after that want to do a bit more walking abroad.
I enjoying going for coffee or a drink with friends and going away with my partner. I enjoy music, and I am currently taking singing lessons after many years of thinking about it!
An interesting fact? When I was 7 I wrote to the President of Ireland asking to meet her. When I didn’t hear back, I wrote again, and eventually my family and I got invited to a special open day for families in the President’s House. The power of persuasion (or pestering!) pays off.
What languages do you speak? English, Irish and French.
What time zone are you in? UK / GMT.
What hours do you work? I have good availability across the week, including evenings and Saturdays. Get in touch to find a time that suits.
Anything else? I would be delighted to hear from you and work with you to get you thriving. If you have any questions at all, please get in touch. Beir Bua!
POdcast...
Mícheál recently recorded a podcast with Thrive Programme Podcast Presenter Lucy Wood on the physical side of anxiety.
He describes his 4 steps outlining anxious thinking patterns...
- Understand it – realise these anxious symptoms weren’t happening ‘to’ him – they were being created by the way he was thinking
- Start responding differently – changing his self-talk to “this is unpleasant uncomfortable, I’d rather not feel this way, but it’s not dangerous, I can handle this”
- This allowed him to start getting himself through these anxious moments without panicking and running away
- And then he would process it well, so he gained confidence in his abilities and was able to keep progressing
