Hi, my name is...
Thea Sandell

Meet Thea...

Where are you based? I currently live in Southampton UK, but I grew up and lived on the Isle of Wight for 25 years beforehand. My practice is fully online, allowing me to work with people across the UK and beyond.

What do you love about The Thrive Programme? I had emetophobia, anxiety and low self-esteem for 12 years before finding The Thrive Programme. Until then I thought emetophobia was something I would always live with and feel shameful about. The Thrive Programme helped me feel truly understood in my experience with emetophobia, and it also helped me understand myself in a way I never had before.

During my teen years, my anxiety and phobia became so overwhelming that I could barely leave the house, and I even came close to dropping out of university. Completing the Thrive Programme at 20 years old was a turning point I didn’t expect. It not only helped me overcome my emetophobia, but it also transformed my social anxiety, confidence, and self‑esteem. Thanks to Thrive, I now have the tools I need to face life head on.

I have been able to do further study, work, travel and meet some amazing people, something which seemed impossible before. I can now focus on what's important in life and I want to give others the tools to be emetophobia and anxiety free.

What did you do before you became a Coach? Before becoming a Thrive Programme Coach, I completed my BSc in Psychology at the University of Winchester followed by some time in HR.

However, I was drawn back by my passion to help people and went on to complete an MSc in Health Psychology at the University of Southampton. For my dissertation I explored the lived experiences of people with emetophobia and how it affects their health and wellbeing, something which I felt deeply connected to following my own experiences.

I’ve always been passionate about psychology and mental health and spent years volunteering with several mental health organisations to support that passion. I also served as a Youth Board member for the Winchester Youth Council, where I advocated for young people’s mental health needs and helped amplify their voices.

What do you do when you're not working? When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me spending time with friends or curled up on the sofa with a good crime documentary. When city life gets too much, I like to escape to the Isle of Wight where I grew up. I enjoy walking along the beaches and countryside... usually with a pub lunch at the end. In the summer, my favourite place on the Island is Culver Down in Bembridge. It really is a little slice of paradise!

I also love travelling, inside the UK and out. I’m currently working my way through a UK castle‑tour checklist. 5 down and about 4,000 to go!

An interesting fact? I have seen two of my favourite animals in the wild - a sloth and a koala. Though not in the same place.

What days and hours are you available to see clients? I like to be as flexible as I can for clients but Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 5pm-8pm & Saturdays 8am-12pm are the best times for me.

Anything else? I work mainly with young people and adults with emetophobia, other phobias and anxiety.

From Las Vegas to the other side of the
world in Australia. Thrive gave me
the confidence to say yes to
travelling. This is me saying hi to a
koala called Frasier.
