What is emetophobia?
Emetophobia is a phobia of vomit and/or seeing other people vomit. It is widespread and effects around 4% percent of the population - which means there are probably more than 10 million sufferers in just the UK and USA alone.
It is considered by many to be the most debilitating and frightening of all phobias due to the negative impact it has on sufferers lives. Many sufferers also have significant anxiety and depression, others still have OCD, eating disorders, intrusive thoughts and other phobias.
Most sufferers go to great lengths to avoid exposure to vomit and anything else that make them unwell. Many have rituals and safety-seeking behaviours that take significant time each day, and all sufferers feel somewhat out-of-control and stressed by the fears and worries that plague them constantly
The key, is Building Great Mental Health
The key to overcoming any phobia, is building strong, robust Mental health. Phobias and other issues often feel like they happen 'to' you, but in reality, they result from how you react to situations. For example, someone with a spider phobia feels anxious because of their reaction to the spider, not the spider itself. The same applies to stress, anxiety, depression, phobias and low self-esteem—these symptoms and issues are all created by the way in which you are responding to the pressures and hurdles of life.
Our programme empowers children with the skills to change how they react and respond to situations, experiences and the challenges they face. As they build more robust mental health and learn how manage their thinking, beliefs and emotions, all their symptoms - including their emetophobia - will start to fade, and eventually disappear.
